Types of Hardwood Floors

To simplify the explanation about hardwood floors, we can define them in types and species. Below is a description to better understand.

Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood floors consist of a single piece of wood from top to bottom. It comes in a variety of thicknesses, typically 1/2″, 5/8″ but the most common is 3/4″. We can find it in a variety of species. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times. We can buy it unfinished and apply stain and polyurethane or water-based finish, or we can purchase prefinished from the manufacturer.

In addition, a homeowner can walk on the floors right after the installation without needing to stay out of the room for days or, in some cases, out of the property compared to the unfinished option, which requires applying stains and finishes by a skilled worker and allowing it to dry time.

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood floors contain different layers of wood bonded together, looking like a sandwich; in most cases, each grain layer goes in another direction. Some products have the same specie on each layer, but others are built of different species. This system was designed to have wood flooring more resistant to higher moisture environments, which does not necessarily mean the floor is high humidity proof. Therefore, we must consider some precautions before installing an engineered hardwood floor. Checking the humidity and moisture levels of the environment is as essential as solid wood flooring.

Generally comes in 1/2″ and 3/8″ thickness. We can find it in a variety of species. The top layer typically is what the manufacturer considers when labeling the product. Unlike solid hardwood, engineered floors have limited room for sand and can’t refinish some products. We can find it unfinished and apply stain and polyurethane or water-based finish, or we can purchase prefinished from the manufacturer.

Over concrete subfloor: glue down or floating system over an underlayment.
Over plywood subfloor: glue down, staple/nail down, or floating system over an underlayment.

We recommend acclimating all hardwood flooring to the room and temperature conditions of the installation environment for 24 to 72 hours before installation.

Tips to consider when you are looking to purchase hardwood flooring:

Look for flooring that offers a manufacturer’s finish warranty.
Avoid cabin-grade wood floors. Cabin grade flooring is the lowest grade hardwood flooring that didn’t pass for a higher grade quality level. As a result, it has many defective pieces, splints, cracks, unregular board sizes and widths, and clashing color boards. In addition, dealers and manufacturers do not offer finishing or structure warranty on cabin-grade flooring.
Keep the humidity of your room between 45%-55%; this will ensure a long life of your flooring. Hardwood hates oscillations out of these levels. You will notice gaps and splits on your floors during the winter if the inside humidity is too low or cupping and crowning boards during the summer if the inside humidity is too high. You can adjust the humidity level with a dehumidifier during the summer or a humidifier during the winter if necessary.
